At least for me, that adds nothing to the experience. But, yes, the Kyrie opens with spacey washes of harmony, and the final three sections of the mass move toward the greatest simplicity and directness, with a hushed “Amen.”In between, straightforward melodic lines are sometimes delivered in unisons and octaves; elsewhere Gjeilo luxuriates in plush harmonies. Strings sometimes more or less double and elaborate the choral writing, elsewhere wrapping it busy chatters and churns.
Interspersed poems touchingly personalize loss, but also transfigure it. They’re the work of the 16th century Japanese warlord Hōjō Ujimasa, the 18th century Mohican chief Aupaumut, the American Walt Whitman, the Indian Rabindranath Tagore and the Aboriginal Australian Kevin Gilbert.The opening Requiem aeternam begins in lush, pastel harmonies before developing more contrapuntal textures. In the ensuing “Epitaph,” melodies alternate with choral pulsings and chatters.
Dynamics ranged from the most hushed pianissimos to stirring climaxes that never overwhelmed. Solos weren’t especially prominent, but they were delivered with handsome tones by soprano Jennifer Wheeler, alto Sabatina Mauro, tenor Ben Caston and baritone Will Hughes. ChiefAupaumut’s “When it comes time to die” was spoken by Tres Hunter.For this of all programs the hall’s adjustable acoustics could have been set for more warmth.
