Higher federal target needed to curtail fertilizer emissions, says environmental organization cdnpoli

Reducing fertilizer-related emissions is critical to mitigating the impacts of climate change, according to a Greenpeace Canadaaccompanying the list of recommendations. The organization argues that crop and livestock production contributes about 10 per cent of all GHG emissions in Canada, of which one-third come from the nitrous oxide released from nitrogen fertilizer when applied to the soil.
Greenpeace argued in the press release that synthetic fertilizer produced in Canada still contributes to nitrous oxide emissions in the countries where it is exported. Without a production cap, Canada could potentially be in a situation of reducing GHG emissions locally, while contributing to GHG emissions globally, according to the press release.that he doesn’t yet know how much of a cap should be placed on domestic fertilizer production.
“We’re moving into a global food crisis, and we need to be very careful when we put in place policies so that they don’t hinder our abilities to continue to produce and to continue to increase yields. While we are 100 per cent behind efforts towards reducing fertilizer emissions, it can’t be done in a vacuum,” said Proud. “We need to look at climate change in a very, very serious way. There’s no question about that, but that has to be balanced by the effect of measures on food security.
