Receiving Middle States Commission on Higher Education's accreditation of the two sets of three state universities being consolidated is a critical step forward for Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education redesign plans.

Middle States Commission on Higher Education on Tuesday announced it granted accreditation to Pennsylvania Western University and Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, effective July 1. PennWest will hold the degree-granting authority that nows rests with California, Clarion or Edinboro universities. Likewise, degree-granting authority and accreditation of Clarion, Edinboro and California university will transfer toThose universities intend to attach their campus name to the PennWest name. All six campuses will remain open operating with each trio operating under one president, having one faculty and a single academic program, which will not be fully integrated for two more years.
