Environment Canada issued a warning for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands of southeast winds of 70 kilometres per hour gusting to 90 km/h.
Greater Victoria residents should brace for high winds starting Wednesday evening and continuing overnight, bringing possible power outages and ferry cancellations.
The weather agency said a strong low pressure system was approaching Vancouver Island, with eastern sections of the city near Haro Strait and the Southern Gulf Islands at higher risk. As a cold front sweeps through early Thursday morning, the wind direction will switch to southwesterly. Environment Canada warned loose objects could be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage, and tree branches could break and fall on power lines, causing outages.
B.C. Ferries asked anyone with travel plans to watch its website for changes to schedules in the event winds lead to sailing cancellations.
