‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ creator TimFederle says it was “really hard” to get Olivia Rodrigo to return for the series’ final season. “We went out to Olivia,” he tells VF. “Her schedule is extremely packed now.”

It was really satisfying to see characters like Ryan and Kelsey now be acknowledged as queer when they may not have been allowed to when the original films were released. How did it feel to reclaim the history of those characters in the context of a show with many diverse, queer characters?

I felt the permission and, in fact, the duty to explore some of those topics with a cast of authentically proud, diverse, largely queer people because would not have let me get away with Ryan not being fabulous in his own incarnation of the role. Season one, Seb played Sharpay. Season four, we have Dara Reneé bringing Sharpay to life with such a fabulous conviction as this young Black woman. Dara was also the first ever televised Black Elsa inin season three.

I assume you had conversations with Zac Efron, Vanesssa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale about appearing in the final season? We went out to anyone who is a part of the legacy, including my beloved friend Kenny Ortega to play himself, and he wasn’t available. So we created this character for brilliant comedian. The invitation was extended. I did not expect as many yeses as we got. People are busy, schedules happen, and it just doesn’t always work out.Yeah, we went out to Olivia. It was really hard. Her schedule is extremely packed now, as it should be as the poet laureate of angsty ballads. So it didn’t work out.
