Game director Hideo Kojima was awarded the Japanese Minister’s Award for Fine Arts, making him only the second game creator to do so.

Renowned game director Hideo Kojima was awarded the Japanese Minister’s Award for Fine Arts today, making him only the second individual to earn the prize for work in video games. The award is given out annually and is bestowed upon Japanese individuals who have gone above and beyond in the field of art, and is considered one of the country’s most prestigious prizes in the world of entertainment.

Hideo Kojima has been working with video games since 1986 and has helped release some of the world’s biggest titles, most notably the Metal Gear series. Known for his abstract storytelling, Kojima worked for Konami for most of his career until he was suddenly let go from the company in 2015, much to the dismay of fans around the world. He would re-establish his studio, Kojima Productions, as an independent studio partnered with Sony.

— HIDEO_KOJIMA March 15, 2022 Kojima’s award win marks another big leap for the video game industry, as what was once seen as a silly hobby is now being acknowledged by world governments as a form of art. Both Kojima and Miyamoto are icons in the Japanese gaming scene, so anyone familiar with their work probably isn’t surprised to see that they were the ones to bring video games to the cultural spotlight.

In his acceptance tweet, Kojima stated that he aims to continue working with video games for the foreseeable future. He has mentioned a number of times that he has not considered retirement and plans on utilizing his creativity for the rest of his life. Kojima Productions has not announced any upcoming projects since the release of Death Stranding in 2019, but with Hideo Kojima’s tendency to tease new work in obscure and creative ways, it’ll probably be worth the wait.
