Opinion: Here’s where Los Angeles’ mayoral candidates stand on anti-camping ordinances
“Although a great deal of money has been spent on homeless housing and services in Los Angeles, the persistence of public camping continues to be a major concern for voters. Would you support the enforcement of a citywide anti-camping ordinance if Los Angeles met the requirements set out by the U.S. Supreme Court in Martin v. Boise ?”
As I travel around the city, observe people in homeless encampments, talk with law enforcement and mental health experts and meet with organizations that provide every level of homeless services, I have found that our homeless population consists of people with untreated mental health conditions, alcohol and drug abusers, emancipated youths and people who have slipped through the economic safety nets.
