Millions more in the eastern U.S. could be facing unhealthy air today from Canada's wildfire smoke. Here's what you need to know:

A rash of wildfires in the Canadian province of Quebec was fanned by strong winds around low pressure near the New England coast on Monday and Tuesday. The counterclockwise flow around that low-pressure system pushed the surface-based smoke southward into the East.Smoke levels were once again boosted Tuesday by another flare-up of the Quebec wildfires.

That has prompted air quality alerts to be issued for some of the areas where smoke could create health concerns. This pattern will remain largely unchanged for at least the next day or two, so more smoke could impact the eastern U.S. as long as the fires in Canada continue to produce heavy smoke. This weekend, a pattern change will finally kick the low eastward, which will help change the upper-level wind direction. That should help clear out any of the remaining smoke from the region and keep any new smoke from driving straight southward out of Canada into the East., but anything over 100 can start causing issues for people more at risk, like those with asthma or lung disease, children and the elderly.

The smoke affected the Big Apple much of Tuesday, but a particularly heavy batch of it moved into the city during the evening.
