‘What went wrong?’ In answering this question, it must be said that the findings of the panel do not impugn every member of the SSA and its management.

PRETORIA - The findings of a high-level panel that rogue elements within the State Security Agency were acting on instructions of African National Congress factions and interfering with party processes has raised questions about the prospect of the same resources being used to undermine South Africa’s elections.

The panel report which was released on Saturday revealed that an agency unit conducted unlawful operations at the behest of an ANC faction which supported former President Jacob Zuma. The Right 2 Know Campaign’s Thami Nkosi said the recommendations of the high-level panel should be implemented as a matter of urgency.

The Institute for Security Studies’ Jakkie Cilliers said enough had been done to block access to financial resources being abused by rogue elements within the State Security Agency.
