With the departure of CEO Kris Kolluri next month, what happens to the $16 billion Gateway tunnel project?

Kris Kolluri, who served as Gateway Development Commission CEO for two years, submitted his resignation letter on July 18 that’s effective Aug. 16.“Given the anticipated start of major tunnel construction this fall, it is the right time for me to step down and let the next leader oversee the construction phase of ,” Kolluri wrote to the board, giving no other reason for the departure.

“FTA expects to work closely with GDC’s next CEO and its current executive team to ensure the Hudson River Tunnels are delivered on time and on budget,” she said. “We’re anticipating the Palisades will be awarded in the coming weeks and we’ll move forward with the heavy construction of the Hudson River ground stabilization contract portion,” said Steve Sigmund, a Gateway Development Commission spokesperson. “Work on both sides of the river continues and additional contacts awards in the future will continue.”

Perhaps the most Herculean task was getting 73% of the project or $11 billion funded by the federal government, which significantly reduced the remainder to be funded by New Jersey and New York. “The project is moving forward, and we largely have Kris and the hardworking staff at GDC to thank for that,” said Tom Wright, Regional Plan Association CEO. “It was because of his tenacious leadership and unrelenting commitment to this work that the federal government could allocate the historic Full Funding Grant Agreement.”
