Malnourished babies. Women losing hope for their futures. The Star recently spoke to a series of workers providing relief on the ground in Afghanistan. These are their harrowing stories one year after the Taliban took control.
Families are on the brink of starvation, surviving on bread and tea once or, if they’re lucky, twice a day, aid workers tell the Star. Children are leaving hospitals only to return to malnourishment. Women have few options for earning livelihoods to support their families.that could have fed 1,800 children was recently cancelled by a Canada-based aid group because of laws that ban providing property to the Taliban, which is now Afghanistan’s de facto government.
The woman was crying, holding a six-month-old baby who was so undernourished that the infant weighed less than a newborn, Galvin said. “I’m haunted,” said Galvin, noting she’s seen other cases like this and the tolls they take on the mothers’ mental health. “It’s the worst nutrition situation I’ve seen in my UNICEF career.”
“She’s really right,” Galvin said. “I have to scale up prevention programs because I’m going to see a million children and we will have a million stories like that.” More girls are severely malnourished than boys, Galvin said, adding that decisions on food allocation have always been based on gender. “But
