Here’s how much groceries have gone up since 2021

While it may not seem that drastic, average wages have only increased by R5.89 in the same period.

. The ability to get your groceries delivered without having to go into a store isn’t exactly how we pictured the future as kids, but with the absence of flying cars, we’ll take convenient grocery deliveries instead.

So we went as far back as possible to see what a “budget” basket of items we purchased in 2021 would cost today. The bad news is that everything has gone up in price and our basket costs R117 more than it did three years ago.While the price increase on cheese is extreme, we’re more concerned with the items that are zero-rated namely the bananas and onions. Over the course of three years, these tax-free items have increased in price by R10 which is shocking.

These increases, while shocking, are to be expected. Retailers have spent billions mitigating the effects of loadshedding and those costs have been likely been folded into the cost of goods. The ailing economy doesn’t help shoppers either nor does a petrol price which tends to go up more than it falls.
