We’re back to eight nominees in each of the Big Four categories, after two years with bloated lists of 10 contenders.
With these additions, the Grammys have 94 categories — the most since 2009 and 2010, when there were 109 each year. In 2011, the number was cut from 109 to 78, but it has steadily crept back up.
After two years of having 10 nominees in each of the “Big Four” categories – album, record and song of the year plus best new artist – the Academy is dropping the number back down to eight, which was the number in the three previous years. More broadly, Mason believes the move to 10 nominees in the Big Four categories brought in some new genres, especially in best new artist. “We got some people in best new artist from genres we never had before. Yes, we did accomplish what we had hoped would be accomplished by having 10. Now, we’re in a different time. Our voters are different right now. Our voters are more diverse than they’ve ever been. That’s got to have an impact on our nominations.
“We didn’t want to only consider performance films,” Mason says. We wanted to consider films that had a large music component. That [previous] language prevented us from including great films that were about music, that featured musical artists and told the stories of music people and it disqualified them because people weren’t standing on the stage singing songs. There are a lot of them that told incredible stories and feature a ton of great music and should be evaluated.
Regarding the former regional Mexican music album category, Mason says, “We heard from that group that they didn’t like the name. It’s happened before to us. There has been nomenclature that has not been contemporary. [We try to be] sensitive to the group. When we hear from them that they would prefer for it to be called [something else], then that’s the way we act.”
“These are very important crafts,” Mason says. “These are some of the people and members that our music community is built on. Songs and production are the starting point for pretty much everything that happens around music.” The dance community cheered the new category. “This is the biggest victory for dance music at the Grammys in almost 20 years, since the addition of the dance album category in 2005,” Matt Colon, longtime manager of Steve Aoki, toldDance-minded voters who want to vote for best remixed recording have to use up another of their three fields because that category is in the production, engineering, composition and arrangement field.
