DearPrudie: We are only in our late-50s...
My husband retired last May after a 30-year stressful career in law enforcement. I was so glad because the stress he was under concerned us both. Initially, he spent the first few months relaxing and doing nothing much.
It’s great to see him minus all the stress he had. We are planning for my retirement next year. The issue is he does absolutely nothing with his day. He is not depressed, he is just perfectly happy to sit at home on his phone all day on social media, watching videos or playing games. Other retired friends of his invite him out, but he stays in. Not interested in the gym, travel, nothing. When I work from home, I just watch him hang out on the couch all day.
In planning for my retirement, I have been taking extra days to use up accumulated leave. I will ask him if he wants to take short weekend trips, walks in the park, or ANYTHING. He will if I ask him but has zero initiative otherwise. When my friends ask me to meet them he will tag along, but aside from that, he’s a total homebody. He mentions plans he wants to do , but when I ask him to make specific plans or buy tickets/get a hotel, he never does.
