What this means is that we have avoided a far-left populist government with economic policies that would’ve ruined the country. HELEN ZILLE: They are serious portfolios, there’s no question about it, it’s an enormous challenge and an enormous amount of work that has to go into them to try and fix things. Home Affairs has been a disaster in the making for 30 years, and Basic Education just stubbornly refuses to enable our children to read, write, and calculate at the correct level.

HELEN ZILLE: Well, we never wanted 11. If you read the letter that I wrote carefully, I said these 11 are the ones that we would prioritise, and obviously giving the president some idea of the kind of portfolios we were interested in. For some reason, there was a complete misinterpretation of that by saying we were demanding all of these portfolios.

HELEN ZILLE: I think that’s a fair criticism. We weren’t expecting anything like a cabinet that size. We were working on about 27, 28.
