Heavy rainfall in northern parts of Kruger National Park leads to localized flooding and road closures. SANParks advises tourists to exercise caution and use alternative routes.
The Kruger National Park endured isolated heavy rainfall in its northern expanses this weekend, triggering localized flooding. SANParks, the park's management authority, reported that several key roads connecting the Phalaborwa Gate and the Mopani, Shingwedzi, and Punda Maria rest camps are currently impassable.
According to a report published by Lowvelder, the Letaba low-water bridge on the H14 to Phalaborwa is closed, and the Shimuwini Bushveld Camp's access road has been affected since late last night, rendering it inaccessible. \ The Mopani region and its vicinity bore the brunt of the heavy rainfall, while Olifants and Letaba experienced less intense precipitation and haven't reported any road closures, stated JP Louw, SANParks' spokesperson, in a press release. Additionally, the Sable Sleepover Hide, situated approximately 10 kilometers from the Phalaborwa Gate overlooking the Sable Dam, and the Tsendze River have also been inundated by floodwaters. \SANParks is urging tourists currently within the Kruger National Park to exercise heightened caution, opt for alternative routes, and remain updated on the latest information from reception areas at rest camps and gates. Visitors are strongly advised to heed no entry signs, particularly on gravel roads, and refrain from attempting to drive across flooded bridges. The park's disaster management teams are on high alert in the Nxanatseni region. Louw assured that SANParks will disseminate updates to visitors through its social media platforms once the technical services road team concludes its inspection
