The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms across several regions in South Africa until Wednesday, February 19th. Motorists, pedestrians, and residents in low-lying areas are advised to take precautions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall across parts of South Africa until Wednesday, February 19th. Communities in low-lying areas and flat plains in the central and eastern regions are advised to be prepared for disruptive rain. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

The weather service expects rainfall accumulation to range from 20 to 50 millimeters, with cooler daytime temperatures in these affected areas. The cause of these conditions is the influx of moist tropical air from a continental low over Botswana. Severe thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of the southern Free State and northern Eastern Cape, potentially bringing damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy downpours. Additionally, strong damaging winds are possible along the west and southwest coasts of the Cape Provinces due to a tight pressure gradient. While widespread showers (80%) are expected to extend to the North West and Gauteng on Monday, February 17th, with disruptive rain possible in some areas, the overall rainfall pattern is not expected to change significantly. The tropical airmass, typically associated with afternoon and early evening thunderstorms in South Africa, is expected to cause disruptive rain throughout the week, with daily amounts ranging from 30 to 50 millimeters. Coastal areas of the eastern half of the Eastern Cape and the southern coastline of KwaZulu-Natal may also experience disruptive rain before conditions improve. SAWS advises against crossing flooded roads or swollen streams and recommends avoiding travel on bridges or roads in low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce risks and promote public safety during this period of inclement weather
