Opinion: Leger survey reveals that outage led British Columbians to worry about reliability of Canada’s telecommunications industry

Our team at Leger wanted to know how the blackout of one of the country’s largest telecommunications providers affected British Columbians and what they think this means for the future.

One would think that the inconvenience of the outage would make some Rogers customers want to change providers, and 29 per cent of Rogers’s B.C. customers are indeed contemplating a switch.Article content British Columbians are serious about the role that connectivity plays in our lives, with 73 per cent agreeing that the internet is as important as our electrical system, water supply and postal system. Moreover, a resounding 81 per cent told us that this outage is a “wake-up call” — not just for Rogers, but for Canada’s telecommunications industry.Article content

With consumer desire for a market where more companies offer quality services at accessible prices, the biggest loser from the 15-hour outage may be Rogers’ long-planned acquisition of Shaw. More than a year into the $26-billion takeover approvals process, public opinion is not with these large corporations. Sixty-one per cent of British Columbians say the outage decreased their support for the merger and a mere nine per cent of British Columbians support the deal.
