A devastated mum who lost her ‘precious’ 20-year-old daughter to suicide claims she was ‘failed’ by Newcastle University and two police forces.

Phoebe was ‘the most precious, divine person in the world’, her mum says She added: ‘Sometimes I stop still in my tracks. I still can’t believe it, how can it be true? I have lost the most precious, divine person in the world and she was only 20.’

Philosophy student Phoebe was given six sessions of university counselling, along with educational support, after struggling with her living situation and academic expectations in early 2020. After being diagnosed with depression, Phoebe received the tragic news that her dad had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and dealt with a break-up shortly after.

Around 1pm the next day, Phoebe was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary after trying to end her own life. Hilary didn’t reach her daughter until 11.30pm that night but Phoebe was unconscious and died on June 5. Concluding a verdict of suicide, assistant coroner for Newcastle and North Tyneside, Karin Welsh, said: ‘In short, and having considered things very carefully, I cannot identify any point where things should have been done differently for Phoebe by anybody involved in her support.’
