Raygun the baboon, who had captured the hearts of many during his journey to freedom, was brutally killed by schoolchildren. Authorities are investigating the incident, and a petition calling for justice has gained widespread support.
The brutal murder of Raygun the baboon has ignited widespread anger and condemnation. Authorities have pledged swift action, initiating an investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Raygun , who had captured the hearts of many during his remarkable journey to freedom, was mercilessly beaten and set ablaze by a group of schoolchildren just before reaching the wild. This horrifying act was captured on video and disseminated across social media platforms.
Authorities are taking steps to address this tragic incident. Gerald Sambo, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga education department, expressed profound shock and sorrow over the incident at Botleng Secondary School in Victor Khanyi Local Municipality, where a baboon was reportedly attacked and killed by students. He emphasized that such actions are utterly unacceptable and violate fundamental values of respect, empathy, and responsibility. The department vehemently condemns any form of violence against animals, asserting that all living beings, regardless of species, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Sambo highlighted the urgent need for education on the importance of preserving nature and respecting wildlife. He stressed that learners must be taught to understand their role in protecting the environment. He urged all stakeholders, including schools and communities, to collaborate in preventing future occurrences. This can be achieved by fostering a deep understanding of wildlife conservation and environmental responsibility. The department has requested a detailed report from the school regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the Tshwane SPCA has informed that the matter has been escalated to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) as Raygun was killed outside of the Tshwane district. The Tshwane SPCA, deeply saddened by Raygun's brutal killing, pledged to investigate any community complaints regarding the incident and report them to the NSPCA. The NSPCA, along with the Mpumalanga Parksboard, is actively investigating the case. Efforts by Owl Rescue Centre to retrieve Raygun's body were hampered by unwanted attention, forcing them to leave. Raygun had successfully navigated through Pretoria before taking a wrong turn and ending up at the school near Delmas, where he was brutally attacked, stoned, and set on fire, resulting in his death. Brendan Murray, from Owl Rescue Centre, described how they later recovered Raygun's remains, only to find they had been further desecrated by a traditional healer. Raygun was laid to rest at the Sanctuary, with Murray expressing profound sorrow and emphasizing the urgent need for stronger wildlife protection and education on animal respect. In response to the tragedy, Pretoria resident Monique Harmse has launched a petition demanding justice for Raygun's killing and raising awareness about animal cruelty. By Monday, the petition had garnered significant support, accumulating over 875 signatures from residents calling for accountability for the perpetrators.
