COVID-19 risk index is still at moderate despite 13 active outbreaks across the city
As the second week of August wraps up, Public Health Sudbury and Districts advises 254 new cases of COVID-19 were reported for the past seven days.
But the local risk index is still listed as moderate and no new deaths have been reported in the past seven days. The total local death toll since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 is 163 deaths. Friday's summary revealed 80 new cases of COVID-19. There were 79 cases reported on Wednesday and 95 cases reported on Monday, bringing the weekly total to 254. Last week's total case count was 217. The total number of cases since March of 2020 is 17,596. The largest number of those cases were people in the 20 to 39 age group.
The PHSD summary also revealed there are 13 active COVID-19 outbreaks in the Greater Sudbury area. This involves outbreaks in local long-term care homes, the hospital, retirement homes and other congregate settings. Health Sciences North is reporting 29 COVID-19 cases in the hospital, with two of those individuals in the Intensive Care Unit. This is down from the 37 cases reported last Friday. The hospital also reports there are two active outbreaks, one on the eighth floor North Tower as of July 8, and also in the Medical Inpatient Overflow Unit, as of July 26.
