South Africa's unemployed doctors face frustration as the Minister of Health advises them to seek work elsewhere. Over 400 doctors remain jobless despite completing their training.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, faced criticism for advising South Africa's unemployed doctors to seek work abroad or in the private sector, as over 400 doctors remain jobless. Motsoaledi responded to a recent protest by unemployed doctors in Bhisho, Eastern Cape, who demanded employment from the department, stating that the country lacks funds to hire them and they cannot receive preferential treatment due to the national unemployment issue.

He suggested that doctors, after completing their internship and community service, are not entitled to automatic state employment and can work anywhere globally or in the private sector. However, the South African Medical Association Trade Union (Samatu) general secretary, Cedric Sihlangu, expressed shock at the minister's encouragement for doctors to leave the country, arguing that it demonstrates a lack of understanding regarding the urgency of the situation. Sihlangu highlighted that Samatu has documented over 400 doctors who have completed their community service but remain unemployed, emphasizing the dire consequences of the health department's strategy in retaining doctors. National health department spokesperson Foster Mohale stated that doctors become independent practitioners after completing internship and community service, eligible to apply for jobs in both public and private sectors. While the government strives to improve healthcare access by recruiting more doctors, budget constraints hinder their ability to hire as many as needed. Mohale defended Motsoaledi's comments, stating that the minister aimed to explain that unemployment affects all professions. Nevertheless, Sihlangu argued that the majority of unemployed doctors hail from rural communities and aspire to serve their areas. One unemployed doctor, Malwandle Mukansi, shared his disillusionment upon hearing the minister's statement about lack of funds for employment, explaining the challenges he faces as a qualified doctor without a job. Another doctor from the Eastern Cape, who wished to remain anonymous, appealed to the government to prioritize employing doctors due to the pressing need for them in the public sector
