Health authorities are urging Australian residents to make sure their vaccinations are up to date following an early spike in flu and measles cases. 9News

“The flu virus changes every year and so that’s why you need a different flu shot every year.”

While reminding residents of the flu vaccine, health authorities are also reminding residents to ensure they are vaccinated against measles, which has seen a spike in cases this year.Almost all of the cases stem from travel to South East Asia – in particular the Philippines – by patients who either did not have the required vaccinations or were too young to receive them.

NSW Health’s Communicable Diseases Branch director Dr Vicky Sheppeard said people are susceptible to measles if they have never had the disease in the past or have not received two doses of the measles vaccine. “The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is free in NSW for anyone born during or after 1966 who hasn’t already had two doses,” Dr Sheppeard said.It can take up to 18 days for measles symptoms to develop, which include fever, sore eyes and a cough followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash spreading from the head and neck to the rest of the body.
