'Sex and the City' is celebrating its 21st birthday

Certainly, there was nothing new about seeing a TV series focused on four female friends. NBC's"The Facts of Life," which aired from 1980 to 1988, was the originator of the concept. NBC's"The Golden Girls" roared out of the gate in 1985 and was a Saturday night staple for seven seasons. And then there was CBS'"Designing Women," another seven season entry that offered a Southern flare.

Based based on Candace Bushnell's 1997 book of the same name and created by Darren Starr,"Sex and the City," of course, showcased the trials and tribulations of Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes.

While other aforementioned earlier entries did touch on sex and serious issues ,"Sex and the City" was raw and it was real. Issues like Samantha experimenting in a gay relationship and fighting cancer, Charlotte dealing with an impotent husband and a foot fetishist, and Miranda not having a"date" for her mother's funeral and dealing with motherhood as a single woman are just a few examples.

While Carrie being saved in Paris by"Big" in the final episode , perhaps, went against the independent female theme of the entire series,"Sex and the City" accomplished something most shows do not. Twenty-one years later, people are still talking about. They are still watching it. And, on this day when"Sex and the City" is now a true"adult," we celebrate its relevance.
