The first human case of West Nile Virus infection has been reported in Hays County on Wednesday, and the second human case in Central Texas .
According to San Marcos officials, the Hays County Health Department said the patient is a resident of the 78610 zip code area, They were diagnosed with West Nile Fever. DSHS confirmed a second positive mosquito pool in the unincorporated area of the 78666 zip code on Tuesday, July 23. The firstSymptoms of infection include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash on the trunk of the body, and swollen lymph nodes. Those 50 or older, as well as those with compromised immune systems, are at higher risk for more severe symptoms.
Hays County Epidemiologist Ian Harris reminds residents that “West Nile Virus is not contagious and that humans are ‘dead-end host,’ humans are not capable of transmitting the virus to other individuals.”Residents are urged to avoid mosquito bites by following the three Ds:Whenever outside, use insect repellents with the active ingredient DEET or other EPA-registered repellents, and always follow label instructions.
