The invasive species, native to South America, was found in the river in October 2019.

The pesky snails originally from South America were discovered in the river in October 2019 and have been eating up the local environment ever since. SARA has been trying to prevent them from moving farther downstream. The snails have no predator along the river, so it's been a haven for them to multiply.

About 6 inches in diameter, the snails grow to be much larger than the typical quarter-size snail, and they leave bright pink egg clusters on the walls and plants above the water in which they live.Shaun Donovan, manager of environmental sciences at SARA, said last fall that the River Authority suspects someone who had been keeping apple snails in their aquarium dumped them in the river.

The new dashboard on the SARA website gives a clear picture of how many adult apple snails and egg clusters have been collected. So far, nearly 10,000 apple snails and over 45,000 egg clusters have been removed. Some line graphs also show how many apple snails and egg clusters have been removed in different years.

The areas where the snails are being removed have been broken down into four areas: the Downtown Reach, Museum Reach, King William Reach and Mission Reach.
