Steven Mailen and Ryan Sheers both sobbed in the dock as they were jailed for more than two years each after becoming involved in a large-scale disturbance in Hartlepool.

After an afternoon bingo session turned chaotic in Hartlepool, a couple who found themselves in the midst of riots and were both bitten by police dogs have been sentenced to two years and two months in prison each.

However, his confidence diminished swiftly when a police dog latched onto his shorts, dragging them down in a spectacle that left onlookers laughing. The protestor, humbled and embarrassed, shed tears at last week's court session before receiving his sentence today, reports the Mirror. Prosecutor Rachel Masters said officers at the scene identified Mailen as "one of the main instigators of a large-scale disturbance". The court was told that for over 10 minutes, he "taunted" police and seemed to be "inciting the gathered crowd to use violence towards them". Both Mailen and Sheers tried to breach a police cordon, it was reported.
