Harry Potter's magical universe introduces many fantastical creatures such as the Basilisk and Centaurs. The Thestrals are among the most fascinating
Thestrals are fantastical creatures in the Harry Potter universe, but due to their invisibility, not everyone can see them. Throughout eight movies, the Harry Potter franchise introduces a magical world and an array of relatable characters who grow up together. The fantasy setup offers a modern take on witches on wizards, but Harry Potter is a coming-of-age story at its core.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While most of the movies take place entirely in Hogwarts during Harry's school years, many scary monsters and magical creatures are introduced, some of them deadly and dangerous, while others, such as Aragog and the Centaurs, become unpredictable allies. All these creatures have a narrative purpose and feature some of the most fascinating moments of the movies.
Through the eyes of many, Thestrals are considered bad omens due to the morbid element surrounding their mythology. They look terrifying at first, with their huge wings and dark aspect, but they turn out to be smart, gentle creatures. While some will argue that Thestrals represent death, their presence actually means the opposite: they are solace in the face of tragedy.
Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood & Several Other Characters Are Able To See Them Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix delicately explores grief by introducing the Thestrals, but also Luna Lovegood. Harry and Luna's friendship is beautiful and one of the best in the franchise. When they meet, she understands Harry's pain and explains to him why he couldn't see the Thestrals before.
Rubeus Hagrid is another character who can see the magical creatures: he's fascinated with Thestrals and can easily handle them, which explains why they became a vital part of Hogwarts. In the Harry Potter books, Neville reveals that he witnessed his grandfather die thus he could see the Thestrals, but this information is not in the movies.
