Harry Maguire has cemented his place back in Man United's strongest XI after a hat-trick of encouraging performances.
From struggling for minutes to being a regular starter, the current landscape of Harry Maguire's Manchester United career has changed in the blink of an eye. He followed up his man-of-the-match performance against Sheffield United on Saturday by getting United out of jail against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday evening.
Though his match-winning goal was, quite rightly, the headline act of his performance against the Danes, Maguire, despite a slightly shaky start, did very little wrong at centre-back once again. After back-to-back starts alongside Jonny Evans, he was rejoined at the heart of the back four by Raphael Varane.
Though three encouraging performances do not instantly make up for the below par showings he has put in over the past couple of years, the 30-year-old deserves credit. He has looked more comfortable and composed than ever before, proving solid defensively and calm and assured with the ball. "It's less responsibility in that perspective, we need more than 11 players, we need that competition so he can fight himself in the team, he has potential, it's up to him to get his position," said Ten Hag, speaking in the summer. "Now we can focus more on his role but centre back has to communicate, organise, it's a big area where you have to perform as a centre half, there is prevention that you have to come into action.
