I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
It’s been 13 years since Part 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended that saga, so obviously it’s time for a streaming reboot. A while back it was announced that HBO was making a new Harry Potter streaming series that would likely run for at least seven years, one for each book. But knowing how these streaming series work these days, it may be more than that.for children 9-11, and you have to be in the UK or Ireland, so no fake accents.
An HBO series is an entirely different animal, as essentially all modern, big-budget streaming series now have 1.5-2 years in between seasons, rather than one. If an actor wars 11 when the they started, they would be21 by the time the final season aired if the gap was 1.5 years. If it was closer to 2 years, they would be 25 and it would be the year 2040+, given that the show isn’t even filming yet. Yikes. Hopefully HBO figures out how to film this in rapid fire and get these seasons out quickly.
There is another aspect to this that is no doubt going to create unfortunate controversy. The casting call emphasizes that they will accept all applicants regardless of ethnicity, disability, race, sexual orientation and gender identity. This is a more than standard statement for things like this, but in terms of how this will play out, I’d be shocked if they were brave enough to do a non-white Harry, and Ron is not going to lose his ginger looks.
I’m sure the show will be widely-watched. I am not sure it will be good given the current state of a lot of Max-era productions under new management.
