Harper endorsement of Poilievre victory ‘mic drop’ or ‘strategic’ move for win, says former PM’s senior aide cdnpoli
, conducted before Brown’s removal from the leadership race, 48 per cent of Conservative supporters favoured Poilievre as the next party leader—compared to only 14 per cent who backed former Quebec Liberal premier Jean Charest.
“Stephen Harper has a great deal of support, admiration, and credibility in the province of Quebec,” said Armour, who also served as communications director for both former Reform Party leader Preston Manning and Stockwell Day, leader of the former Canadian Alliance.Armour acknowledged rumours of “Harper support, Harper involvement, Harper pulling the strings” in Poilievre’s campaign, “which is one of the reasons he said there has been a lot of speculation about whom he supports.
“In the past several years, he’s has been our party’s most vocal and effective critic of the Trudeau Liberals. He’s been talking about the issues, especially the economic issues that matter: slow growth, debt, inflation, lack of job and housing opportunities, and the need to fix the institutions that are failing Canadian families,” says Harper.
Poilievre “has made by far the strongest case that he is the person” to lead the Conservative Party to victory in the next federal election, said the former prime minister, who declined to endorse any candidates in the 2017 and 2020 federal Conservative leadership races that Tory MPs Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole , respectively, won.“If I had a ready answer about where the party had to go to achieve victory, I probably wouldn’t have kept it to myself for the last two elections,” he said.
“I don’t think it was for any particular strategic or timing reasons. If it were, I would have expected it to have come out earlier—before ballots came out in early July,” said Lalh.
