From developer DONTNOD_Ent comes HarmonyGame, which is an interesting experiment in player agency that appears to be shaping up quite nicely. Our preview:
Developer Don't Nod has always found strength in blending together strong character relationships with moments of real magic. The Life Is Strange games are an example of exactly what Don't Nod can do, as shown in the excellent Life Is Strange Arcadia Bay collection. However, Harmony: The Fall Of Reverie does things a little differently, at least based on a recent preview build, and not only because of its genre shift to more of a visual novel.
The preview of Harmony: The Fall Of Reverie showcases the first couple of hours of the game, and already the title seems to include a thematic focus on family and difficult relationship dynamics, which Don't Nod explored with great effect in the brilliant Tell Me Why. More than this, though, is the way that Harmony: The Fall Of Reverie could instead look at the concept of fate.
Polly - or Harmony as she is known in the Reverie - and her journey is very much reliant on her relationship with the game's Aspirations. These are beings who tie to certain emotions, states of mind, or ideologies, such as Bliss, Truth, or Chaos, almost akin to The Endless from The Sandman.
Long-term fans of Don't Nod may be surprised by the format of Harmony: The Fall Of Reverie, as it discards the 3D environments of titles like Life Is Strange and instead almost takes the form of a visual novel. The title is therefore heavily text-based with more static images and a focus on emotive character models.
