Baseball, the great game with all its majestic, if misunderstood, vagaries and mysteries, provides most of the lessons a father can impart to his son.
Whoever said, “There’s no crying in baseball” surely was not talking about competitive travel baseball. I have needed a good cry any number of times. Our weekends, like this one when we will be in Omaha to indulge the twin bill of our own game and the College World Series , have settled into a steady rhythm of two games on Saturday and play-until-you-lose on Sunday. If you are not a baseball or softball family, you do not understand that it takes all weekend — and you love it. Friends may ask if you would like to go to dinner over the weekend. A baseball family thinks, “How would I do that? That’s crazy talk.
Father’s Day could only occur during baseball season. The game, like the summer, allows a father and his children to talk about things that are important. A baseball diamond teaches the seasons of life. It is a place of magic for the young as they learn to throw and hit a curveball. And there is room for old ball players, closing their careers.
