“I was like, ‘You know what? Maybe doing a podcast talking about Indigenous people’s realities and what they go through would be helpful.’ There’s not something wrong with us genetically and this is why a lot of Indigenous people are in care. It’s actually because of trauma.” Qavavauq-Bibeau draws on her work as inspiration for the podcast. Through the Iskweu project at the Native Women’s Shelter, she acts as a liaison between the families of missing Indigenous women and the police in Montreal. She compiled a database on murdered and missing Indigenous women in the city, connecting dots and scanning archives to uncover many more cases.Article content
“The traditional media has dehumanized Indigenous people for so long. When an Indigenous woman is missing or murdered, they concentrate on the wrong things, like being a sex worker or a drug addict. But it’s just like, ‘She was a person. She mattered to someone,’ ” she said. “When we eat traditional foods, we sit on the kitchen floor with various food items, like frozen meat or fish, placed on top of cardboard. The cardboard is sometimes placed over a flat piece of plywood to protect the floor, and everyone gathers and sits around the area and cuts and shares the food collectively,” she explained.
