As things get surreal in the U.S. after the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Quebec women can breathe a little easier about accessing the abortion pill.

Also of concern, women aren’t always aware of their options. The results of a Léger poll presented at thelast month showed that although 99 per cent of Quebec women between the ages of 18 and 54 support the right to abortion, only 61 per cent knew that there are non-surgical alternatives.

There is the morning-after pill, which can prevent pregnancy if taken 12 to 24 hours after unprotected sex, , which can be prescribed up to nine weeks after a missed period to end a pregnancy through a process not unlike a natural miscarriage. Both are covered by the Régie d’assurance maladie du Québec.Article contentBut until recently, Quebecers seeking the abortion pill were required to visit a doctor who had received specialized training and have an ultrasound. This was an added hurdle when time is precious and the health system is under strain.
