Oakland teachers begin one-day strike
Instead of the usual lines of cars winding through Oakland school parking lots for the morning student drop-off Friday morning, there were picket lines of educators, parents, students and even administrators forming at many of the city’s public schools.
La Escuelita will be transformed from a K-8 school to a K-5 school at the end of this academic year. Hillcrest K-8 will also become an elementary school, after the 2022-23 academic year. Declining enrollment is a result of under-resourcing and underfunding the schools, Brown continued, citing 18 schools that have closed since 2004. In that time period, the number of charter schools in Oakland has grown — sometimes on the campuses of former district public schools.
But Brown and other educators on Friday continued to publicly call on Bonta to launch the investigation and urged school board officials to reconsider their plan to close the schools, at least until a much longer period of community discussion can take place. “I look to the school board,” Thomas continued. “Engage these families, find out what it’s like to be here.”
