A Hammond woman got one year probation for admitting she hit a relative with a gun.
Tinita Harris, 48, of Hammond, signed a plea deal filed Thursday for battery, a Class A misdemeanor. She was sentenced the same day. Police officers were called Dec. 18 to the 500 block of Lewis Street where the relative showed them swelling and redness behind her left ear. She and Harris got into an argument, then pointed the gun at the woman.
Harris later accused her of damaging her door. “What are you going to do, kill me?” the victim asked, before Harris struck her with the weapon. Harris told police she had “every right” to protect her house, according to charges. Another woman came over trying to “calm” the situation, according to the affidavit. A child they interviewed handed officers the weapon, a black .380 semi-automatic handgun.
