Nova Scotia ACORN members showed up to Halifax city hall on Tuesday pushing council to hold delinquent landlords accountable.Lisa Hayhurst is crossing her fingers that a proposed mandatory landlord registry before Halifax council will finally get her apartment building up to scratch.
For more than four years, Nova Scotia ACORN has lobbied the city to implement such a registry. The city itself has been mulling the idea for about a decade.Hayhurst and ACORN held a rally in front of City Hall on Tuesday, with the aim to make sure that the proposal actually gets passed and becomes reality.
But there are issues with the proposed registry. While the program would include additional standards for landlords to meet, plus fines ranging from $150 to $10,000, it's unclear how rigorous the program would be. "There's risk with publishing the registry without having a good baseline for compliance data. The last thing you want to do is give the public or someone looking to rent the illusion or understanding that because a property has been registered or on the registry everything is OK with it."
Lisa Hayhurst, a member of ACORN living in Dartmouth, says she's complained to the city multiple times about the conditions of her apartment building but has seen no results. - Andrew Rankin
