“As late as 1914, there were only 30 houses listed in Lake View,” says Pfeiffer, “and seven years later, there were 63 houses.” Developers Searcy and Maulding even had to sue some farming neighbors to keep them from pasturing cattle on these wide-open spaces, which gradually would be sold in parcels up to 5 acres and used for raising crops and livestock, including chickens and pigs.
A 1941 classified ad for the sale of the “six-room cottage” at this address describes it as having “every modern convenience,” with fruit trees, 1½ acres in cultivation and “conveniences for chickens” on Monterey and Route 90 . The address as such drops out of the city directory in the early 1950s. Sanborn Insurance Co. maps, which might have included a little more structural or contextual detail, didn’t cover the area. Although part of lot 60 was sold to Bexar County, it does not appear to have been for highway development.
