Crape is new to the tech sector and has re-skilled as a software developer after spending more than a decade as a project manager in oil and gas. He graduated from SAIT’s Tech Careers program in October, and is currently working as a freelancer. It can be challenging to break into the sector, despite more than 4,000 open positions, without prior years of experience in the field.

While the Hackathon will be setting out to solve downtown issues this weekend, Yew said the real goal is to help develop a culture of energy and creativity in the sector in Calgary. Other centres that have gone big on tech, like Silicon Valley, regularly host hackathons and they have become an integral part of the ecosystem and drive major sponsorship dollars.Crape said it is a way for the sector to showcase itself in Calgary.
