The Freshwater Land Trust announced this week that it has closed on a conservation easement that will permanently protect 1,128 acres of sensitive land in Coosa County.
“The Coosa River Basin was one of the most biologically rich ecosystems on the planet,” Thrasher said in a news release. “Only fragments now remain. Conservation easements are legally binding agreements between landowners and a government or private land stewardship group like the Freshwater Land Trust to permanently protect ecologically sensitive land. The land can either be purchased or donated to the organization that pledges to manage it going forward.
Hatchet Creek is considered critical habitat to the threatened Tulotoma snail and nine species of freshwater mussels that are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
