REVIEW | City Press received an exclusive first drive in SA on its top-of-the-line model, the Ora 400 GT, which blends retro and tech seamlessly. Read more about Nafisa Akabor's experience with GWM, which will launch its first EVA in the country this year:
Great Wall Motors, otherwise known as GWM, will launch its first electric vehicle in South Africa this year, and it is expected to be the cheapestin SA. The Ora is a compact city car with pricing announced in May ranging between R716 900 to R915 900. This places the base model at a cheaper price than the Mini Cooper SE, which starts at around R750 00.
It has four doors and a hands-free tailgate that opens when you wave your foot under the sensor with the keys in your pocket. The boot space is marginally bigger than the Mini. However, GWM offers more leg room for the passengers. And if you’re wondering why the Ora’s exterior looks familiar, it was designed by former Porsche designer Emanuel Derta. The interior is characterised by a double-length infotainment screen that houses the driver display, but the infotainment side offers a touchscreen.
When I’m driving an EV, I want to be more efficient and prolong the range, so using all its power all the time defeats the purpose. However, who doesn’t love taking off at the traffic lights at maximum power? The GWM Ora is not the only Chinese EV expected to enter the South African market this year. Build Your Dreams, also known as BYD, launched its brand in South Africa at an event in Johannesburg on June 29.
