With natural gas supply from Southcentral, specifically the Cook Inlet, coming up short of expectations, the board determined maintaining the unit’s use has proven necessary for the time being. The updated SGP eliminates a directive under which the utility would seek 30-50 Megawatts from Southcentral, replacing that goal with a more general intention to secure enough baseload generation to eventually wave goodbye to the problem-child coal plant.
The modified SGP also cements the energy co-op’s ongoing effort to integrate large-scale renewables, setting the intention to finalize power purchasing agreements and prop up sufficient energy storage for such projects. The power purchasing agreement between Alaska Renewables and GVEA is still in the works, according to McDonnell, and DNR has yet to issue a final decision on the lease.
