This fall, the CAF will adopt the most-relaxed, most gender-neutral dress code of any military in the world.Century and making careers in the service more appealing to a younger generation. Hogwash.And to the extent this truly is about recruiting more soldiers, sailors and airmen , it will have the exact opposite effect. The kind of young men and women who have traditionally been drawn to military careers will likely be put off by the weirdness of it all.
Long hair proved especially problematic during field exercises where it necessitated more water being hauled in for hair washing. And it led to more lice – way more lice. The exercise lasted just 15 months before hair had to be off “das kragen” , again. “Hello, you’ve reached Dutch military headquarters. If you are calling outside normal business hours, please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. If you are under imminent threat of invasion, please call the Americans or Brits.”
Servicemen and women who don’t have to wear a standard uniform or hair length, soon begin to think it might be OK to buck other rules, too, like marching in the sun or following commanders’ orders.Article content
