Carrying a handgun to a high school football game as a Jefferson County teen did Friday night is “totally unacceptable” and has “no place” in school events, schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin said Saturday.handgun taken into custody at the Hueytown High School vs. Ramsay High School football game
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief David Agee said earlier that school resource officers assigned to the game saw a disturbance in the Hueytown stands and went to intervene. A 16-year-old boy with a handgun was stopped trying to run by school staff and deputies. “As soon as an officer from Jefferson County pulled out his taser, the guy tried to make a B-line up the stairs to the pressbox,” Byram said. “I’m in the pressbox and as soon as he came around corner, I opened the door and tackled him to the ground until the cops got up there.”
Here is Gonsoulin’s full statement: “We are currently reviewing what happened at the Hueytown football game Friday night and expect to release more information on Monday. However, for now, let me say this type of behavior is totally unacceptable. It has no place in Jefferson County Schools. I am very grateful that there were no injuries.”
