CONAKRY - Three doctors in Guinea were on Tuesday found guilty in the death of a young woman who was raped in hospital in a case that has shocked the nation, an AFP journalist saw.

M'Mah Sylla, a 25-year-old secretary, died in 2021 in Tunisia, where she had been evacuated for treatment after being raped in a Guinean hospital, the government said in a statement at the time. On Tuesday, a criminal court in a suburb of the capital Conakry found Daniel Lamah, Patrice Lamah and Celestin Millimouno guilty of assault and battery resulting in death without intent, and of abortion.A fourth doctor, Sebory Cisse, was convicted of causing risk to others.Patrice Lamah and Daniel Lamah were each sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Cisse was sentenced to one year, the AFP journalist noted.

Millimouno, who is at large, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. An arrest warrant was issued for him. Sylla's death caused a stir on social media and led to online petitions and the use of the slogan "Justice for M'Mah Sylla".
