Gavin Williams' right knee gave way and he left Tuesday's start against Minnesota after just one inning
, Williams told reporters that he had expressed to Willis and manager Terry Francona his desire to remain in the game, but he understood why he was being taken out. The 24 year old has pitched a combined 125 2/3 innings between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus this year, more than any of his two professional seasons.
“That was more his thing,” Williams said. “Kind of a career high innings and you don’t want to risk anything.” Williams was making his 13th appearance for Cleveland since joining the club in late June. He is 1-5 with a 3.46 ERA and 68 strikeouts over 65 big league innings with 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings and a 1.277 WHIP. The Guardians have an off day Thursday that will give Williams an extra day of rest between starts, and Willis said erring on the side of caution was the proper move.
“Anytime something like that happens, when we have to take someone out of the game, that’s the right decision to make,” Willis said. “Sure there’s concern. We want to take care of not only Gavin but all of our guys. So hopefully it’s minor and won’t cost us very much time.”
