Josh Naylor is set to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Tuesday.MINNEAPOLIS — Reinforcements for Cleveland’s lineup could be on the way soon as slugger Josh Naylor is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Akron, the Guardians announced.
In addition, Cleveland has selected the contract of left-hander Daniel Norris to bolster its bullpen as the club begins a critical three-game series in Minnesota. Norris, 30, begins his third stint with the major league club after appearing in games June 17-20 and July 24-Aug. 17. Norris was released earlier this month and elected free agency, but re-signed with Cleveland two days later.
Naylor, sidelined since Aug. 1 with a strained right oblique, has missed 24 games, during which Cleveland’s offense has slugged a paltry .355 with 18 home runs. Naylor’s 79 RBI still lead the club, and he ranked third in the American League in batting at the time of his injury. In Naylor’s absence, the club traded for veteran Kole Calhoun from the Dodgers farm system and brought in outfielder Ramon Laureano. Calhoun has hit .288 with a .796 OPS and two home runs in 17 games. Laureano has appeared in 16 games and is batting .255 with a pair of home runs and nine RBI.
