No pregame speeches are necessary when the Guardians and Twins meet on the diamond.
Entering the series opener, Minnesota has held at least a six-game lead on five of the previous seven days. But the Twins have been unable to sustain a run that puts the Guardians away for good. They are 15-15 in their last 30 games while Cleveland is 12-18.
Since the start of last season, 21 of the 26 games between the two clubs have been decided by three runs or fewer and 13 of those by one run. “I like the fact that we compete with ‘em because I think they’re pretty good,” Francona said. “We’re going to have to, because we’ve got some ground of makeup and it’ll be difficult. But I’m kind of looking forward to seeing how we do.”
Francona said the Twins have done a good job of lengthening out their lineup. The emergence of rookie Edouard Julien and the production of catcher Ryan Jeffers have allowed Baldelli to mix and match his lineups to maximize each player’s strengths. “They’ve got a lot of ways to kind of come at you,” Francona said. “Kids like Julien who’s got some big splits, but if you keep him one way he’s got over a .900 , and they can match up.”
