Manager Terry Francona said Tuesday morning that right-hander Hunter Gaddis will start Friday against the Mariners, with Xzavion Curry tentatively taking Gaddis's spot in the bullpen.
“He’ll pitch an inning with us today ,” said Francona, when asked about Curry. “He’ll most likely go with us up to Seattle, barring something unforeseen. I just feel the need to say that.Gaddis and Curry made it to the final handful of spring training games with the big league team. Curry was optioned to Class AAA Columbus and Gaddis won a spot in the bullpen with fellow rookie Tim Herrin.Last season Gaddis made two starts with Cleveland that did not go well.
This spring Gaddis posted a 2.77 ERA with 17 strikeouts in five games. He threw 70 pitches in a minor league start on Saturday because pitching coach Carl Willis wanted to keep the 6-6, 250-pound Gaddis stretch out just in case he was needed in a longer outing.Curry made six appearances, including one start, in big league camp. He posted a 5.14 ERA, allowing eight runs and 16 hits in 14 innings.Regarding Curry, Francona said, “Curry could give us multiple innings out of the bullpen.
